چکیده

We believe that a significant improvement in health and a decrease in the age-specific morbidity and mortality from various diseases can be achieved by varying the concentrations in the body of the molecules that are normally present, many of which are required for life (1). The corresponding field is described as “orthomolecular medicine.” An important part of orthomolecular medicine, orthomolecular diagnosis, is the process of determining the concentrations of various substances in the human body (2). We have studied some of the techniques for determining the amounts of different substances in body fluids. Most of our experiments on orthomolecular diagnosis have involved the use of gas-liquid chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, or mass spectrometry. In this paper we discuss the approach to this problem that we have developed during the past five years and discuss examples taken from the chromatographic experiments. In general, we have not required that our experiments be based on any particular biochemical mechanisms related to particular diseases. We have not actively searched for qualitative or quantitative changes in single substances that are characteristic of single diseases. Instead, for each disease we have carried out careful quantitative analysis for as many substances as we are able to measure at low cost. We are particularly interested in preventive medicine. Therefore, we have restricted these measurements in the effort to achieve the goal that the entire procedure can be offered to apparently well persons at a cost of $10 or less if it is found to be useful.

The Vitamin D-Problem An Important Lesson in Orthomolecular Medicine

Orthomolecular Medicine Defined The prefix "ortho," from the Greek "orthos," meaning straight or correct, in the term "Orthomolecular therapy" indicates that the therapy is of substances which are the same as those that are naturally present in the human body. The original definition of this term, in which inference to the correction of deficiency is made, is contained in the following statemen...

Megascorbic Prophylaxis and Megascorbic Therapy: A New Orthomolecular Modality in Veterinary Medicine

The term “Orthomolecular” in the title above may be unfamiliar to some veterinarians. By definition it means “right molecule” and refers to a new branch of medicine developed by Linus Pauling (1968 and 1974). He defines it as follows: “Orthomolecular Medicine is the preservation of health and the treatment of disease by the provision of the optimum molecular constitution of the body, especially...

Orthomolecular Medicine and Megavitamin Therapy: Future and Philosophy

"Megavitamin therapy" was first coined in 1952 by psychiatrists Humphry Osmond and Abram Hoffer to describe the large dosages of niacin used in the treatment of schizophrenia and mescaline psychosis. Megavitamin therapy has become a sub-category of Orthomolecular medicine. The term "Orthomolecular" was first utilized by two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling in 1968 to characterize the treatment...

Orthomolecular Therapy

Orthomolecular therapy dates back to the early 1950s when a few psychiatrists began adding massive doses of nutrients to their treatment of severe mental problems. The original substance was vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid or nicotinamide), and the therapy was termed "megavitamin therapy." Later the treatment regimen was expanded to include other vitamins, minerals, hormones, and diets, any of which...
